Jason A. Dunn, Esq.

I grew up in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.  I attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) where I was a dual major in Political Science and Environmental Policy and Planning.  During the summer of 2000, I participated in the Washington Semester program through Virginia Tech where I received college credit while completing an internship with the Environmental Protection Agency.  I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in December 2000.

Following my college graduation, I worked for the Spotsylvania County as an Assistant Planner before I enrolled in the Tulane Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana in the Fall of 2001.  During law school, I worked as a summer associate for Balch and Bingham, LLP at their Gulfport, Mississippi office.  I graduated with a Juris Doctor from Tulane Law School in the May 2004.  I subsequently passed the Bar Exam and was admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia on November 1, 2004.

I began my legal career as an assistant public defender at the Portsmouth Public Defender’s Office, where I litigated over two hundred cases annually.  Within two years, I was promoted to Senior Assistant Public Defender.  During my tenure as a public defender, I litigated approximately twenty (20) jury trials and achieved acquittals on a variety of serious felony matters.

In 2007, I accepted as position as an associate at Kaufman and Canoles, P.C., where my practice focused on criminal defense and civil litigation, including the title insurance litigation, collecting delinquent real estate taxes, and handling other complex civil litigation.  I also joined the Criminal Justice Act panel for the Norfolk/Newport News Divisions of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. I began representing defendants facing serious federal charges in federal court.

I left Kaufman and Canoles in 2011 to accept as position at a small firm in Chesapeake where my practice focused on the collection of delinquent real estate taxes, criminal defense matters, and personal injury matters.

In April 2014, I opened my own practice, Jason A. Dunn, PLC, in Virginia Beach where I continued collecting delinquent real estate taxes and handling criminal defense matters and personal injury matters.  When I started my solo practice, I collected delinquent real estate taxes for three City Treasurers, and I handled many challenging federal criminal cases.  I have been counsel of record in one hundred and thirty (130) cases in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.  Due to the growth of my tax collection practice, I no longer practice in federal court or handle criminal defense matters in state court.  Currently, my firm collects delinquent real estate taxes for fifteen (15) localities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and we also collect delinquent personal property taxes for several towns.  Currently, Jason A. Dunn, PLC is representing municipal governments, City/County Treasurers, and handling select personal injury matters.
